High-Altitude Aeronautical Platform Station (HAAPS) is a solar power enabled technology which helps in managing the communication channels for a wide range of user base. It is a type of Lighter Than Air (LTA) technology which has been gaining popularity over the last decade due to its benefits for various types of military and other commercial applications. A recent marketing intelligence report published by the BIS Research titled, ‘Global High-Altitude Aeronautics Platform Station Market – End Users Analysis and Forecast for 2018 to 2028’, states that the HAAPS market generated a revenue of $3,756.8 million in 2017 and is likely to grow at an increasing rate in the coming future.
HAAPS technology can be classified based on the platforms that are being used, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, airships, balloons, tethered aerostats and tethered drones. And, these platforms can either be manned or unmanned, which, however, depends completely on the requirements of the application for which it is being used. The unmanned platforms are preferred more as compared to the manned platforms as the endurance of unmanned platforms is higher than the manned platforms. HAAPS technology is primarily used in the aerospace and defense industry for multiple functions such as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. A HAAPS system also has the capability to tap into different applications and scan the earth for occurrences such as volcanic eruptions, oil spilling, landslides and earthquakes, etc. Along with this, HAAPS technology is highly useful in providing telecommunication and internet services to the remotest of locations, which comes in handy in case of military operations.
HAAPS systems normally operate at an altitude of 20 to 50 KMs. Moreover, HAAPS technology is appreciated for benefits like large coverage area, rapid deployment and low operational cost. Other than this, the HAAPS system is highly reliable, easy to maintain and can be upgraded as per the requirement. Another interesting fact regarding the HAAPS system is that it has more advantages than any other conventional satellite or a terrestrial-based system. A few other external factors which are contributing towards the increase in HAAPS market share are increasing tension across borders, upgradation in military modernization program across countries, growing economic conditions and rising land disputes. Some of the key players in the HAAPS market include Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Airbus, TCOM L.P., Thales Alenia Space, Bye Aerospace, Raven Aerostar, Google, Facebook, and Augur RosAeroSystems.
